The next day when i restarted the comp, it would only recognize the drive as a USB device in the device manager (originally, it recognized it as a WD drive). I was able to save a few things to the drive then shut down for the evening.

I hooked it up to my comp via USB and formatted the drive in disc management. I picked up a WD caviar 500GB SATA drive and an external SATA enclosure. I don't mean to jack your post but, I am having a similar problem and hoping that someone can help.
